I had a meeting yesterday afternoon that I missed because….hmmmm…. how can I say this… I wasn’t appropriately dressed to suit my audience. I personally thought I was dressed fine but my colleague didn’t think that my chosen outfit was the best choice. After a minor heart attack and several breaths of air to calm myself down, I decided not to attend the meeting. My excitement had gone from 100 to zero in a span of 10 minutes which was the exact time we spend talking about my outfit. I went home and spent the afternoon with Beck but at the back of my mind, I was still very bothered by the whole thing.
The meeting was taking place in a school and so I’m guessing that I was supposed to wear a nun’s costume? I mean this is 2014 not the middle ages. Below is a picture of what I wore. I took these way before my dismissal. In my opinion, it’s as demure as it can get. I stuck to black, had minimal make up and jewellery. I could have worn pants but none of my jeans and pants fit me post pregnancy and this skirt was the closest to something I could wear to fit the occasion. Anyway the whole ordeal had me thinking about my personal style.
My personal style is something that I happen to take very seriously. It’s also the way I love to express myself. I literally go to bed planning my next outfit and while this has sometimes changed the next morning depending on my mood, I always wear an outfit with an intention and definitely with a purpose. I love this quote by Orson Welles because it defines me as a person and definitely my style.
“Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, and not giving a damn”
Another quote I absolutely love about STYLE is by Charles Bukowski
“Style is the answer to everything.
A fresh way to approach a dull or dangerous thing
To do a dull thing with style is preferable to doing a dangerous thing without it
To do a dangerous thing with style is what I call art
Bullfighting can be an art
Boxing can be an art
Loving can be an art
Opening a can of sardines can be an art
Not many have style
Not many can keep style
I have seen dogs with more style than men,
although not many dogs have style.
Cats have it with abundance.
When Hemingway put his brains to the wall with a shotgun,
that was style.
Or sometimes people give you style
Joan of Arc had style
John the Baptist
I have met men in jail with style.
I have met more men in jail with style than men out of jail.
Style is the difference, a way of doing, a way of being done.
Six herons standing quietly in a pool of water,
or you, naked, walking out of the bathroom without seeing me.”
There’s not more I could add to that because yes style is like art to me. An outfit always takes me back to the memory of how I woke up that morning, what my life was like, which perfume I used to accompany the outfit, which trends were in fashion at the time, whether I was single or in love, which music I was obsessing about at the time.
2011 was the toughest year of my life. I would never wish any of my experiences on my worst enemy. I’m amazed I even survived it even through 2012. By the end of 2012, I was at my wits end on the direction my life was taking and I really needed a creative outlet. I decided to start with enhancing my style choices from trying different hairstyles, make up and I scraped my old wardrobe and bought a whole new closet too. Little did I know this would be an amazing therapy.
I spent my free afternoon today going through my albums and it’s amazing the transformation I have gone through by focusing on myself, what makes me happy and how I present myself to the world. I’m also happy to say that there has been a lot growth in my choices. I chose a couple of pictures (from late 2012 to present) with outfits really signify milestones I am proud of.
